I volunteered at the Lakeshore Christian Preschool where my mother works. Working with the kids in the class helped me to use some of the discipline techniques I learned in class. Using positive discipline can be a lot harder to act on rather than just to talk about. I was able to talk to many of the other preschool teachers as well as the director and talk about some of the extra activities they do within the school. Since it is a Christian preschool, they do prayer and have chapel every Wednesday. This preschool is great for the community because it is one of the cheaper preschools in Fort Mill. It also is very flexible with all parents schedules. You can drop off your child late, or pick them up early and they have many different schedules to accommodate with when parents may need extra child care help. It was super fun being able to help out with the kids, and greet the parents. I also helped make a bulletin board for my mom. This opportunity really helped me believe that I belong working with children.

Amber Jones
1. I volunteered my time at Flowers Ministries, Incorporated. They are a non-profit organization that helps the homeless with transitional housing, financial counseling, empowerment through education, disability claim, etc.
2. While I was volunteering my time here, I often saw myself reflecting on the different types of families that we talked about during group presentations because I helped with family counseling. I got to see and experience first hand the different types of families that are out there and the different struggles that they are going through.
3. I definitely networked with the people that I worked with after I told them what all I plan to do with this a degree in HDFS. After telling them what I wanted to do, they watched me closely with the assignments that they had me doing and ended up offering me an internship with them. They gave scenarios of family situations and they asked me how I would handle those situations and what kind of advice I would give to those families which enhanced my thinking skills because I did not have an answer for them right away. It took me until the next visit to have an answer ready.
4. This organization has a big effect on the community with the way they go about helping others. They are constantly giving back to the community as well as giving the community information apart their services. They fund-raise to help with the costs for the transitional homes for the homeless people that are already apart of the program.
5. I really enjoyed doing community service with organization. I got to see a little glimpse of what I would be doing in my career and I think I will continue doing community service with this organization, especially because I learned so much about my career.

Where did I serve my time?
I had the pleasure of serving my hours at Park Baptist Church. This is a church that I am currently a member at in Rock Hill. I was co-teaching a classroom of second through fourth graders each Wednesday night.
How the service activity reflected concepts learned in the HDFS curriculum?
The activity that I was involved in reflected our class material by the way I was able to teach. I was able to teach elementary aged children from a structured book that was given to me to teach from. That was the first teaching position I was able to be in and felt like a lot of the concepts we talked about in class, I was able to apply in my time teaching the children.
How did I network with other professionals while participating in the activity and what did I gain from networking?
I was able to network with the adults within the church and the elders. The church has a wide variety of members with all types of jobs. I now have contacts in many different areas of the working world. I have multiple teaching ones now as well. I was able to gain a sense of confidence when it comes to networking and meeting new people and putting myself out there in terms of potential jobs in the future.
What is the potential effect the servicer activity and/or service organization could have (or already does) on the community?
The work that Park Baptist is slowly pouring out into the community. For starters, they are educating the future generation on living a life of compassion and giving to others. The church hosts a warming shelter for the entire winter season and allows the children to serve in it as well to help educate them on the importance of helping those who need it and not to mention it is feeding and housing men for the entire cold season.
Give a general reflection on the assignment.
This experience has been invaluable to me. I have been able to get to know the people I go to church with every Sunday while also serving them by teaching their children. I have been able to gain confidence in teaching and in my abilities to plan lessons and deliver them. I have seen this directly correlate to how I give presentations now. I am more confident in what I am presenting and speak with authority. It gave me something to look forward to during the midweek slump and I always with a smile on my face.

Where the student volunteered their time
I volunteered my 15 hours at the Manna House Pantry. The Manna House Pantry is a non-profit food bank that is operated though Mt. Prospect Baptist Church, located at 339 West Black Street, Rock Hill, South Carolina 29731. The food is donated from the Second Harvest Food Bank, Charlotte, North Carolina.
2. How the service activity reflected concepts learned in the HDFS curriculum
The food bank service reflects the concepts of HDFS curriculum because the service is a great resource for a FLE to refer their clients. The service provides each family with healthy foods such as three vegetables, two fruits, eight can goods or package foods, two dairy products and three meats, and a bread and sweet box. This service activity reflected HDFS curriculum by understanding the needs of families and knowing that in order for a child to grow, have physical strength and the ability to stay focus and concentrate in school, and to stop childhood obesity they need healthy foods. A FLE also has to know an elderly person also need healthy foods to sustain their strength. This service activity reflected HDFS curriculum because as a FLE we have to communicate with families one on one and treat each family in need with dignity and respect.

The Manna House Pantry and Mt Prospect Baptist Church has a great impact on the surrounding communities. On Saturdays the doors are open for families in need of food. On Sundays the doors are open for worship.
On Wednesdays the doors are open for bible study. They also offer dinners though out the year. They offer income tax preparations, blood pressure checks and they keep the community informed on HIV/AIDS and Breast Cancer by doing the walks in the community and informing the community where they can go for screenings.

I enjoy volunteering at the Manna House Pantry because it gives me a chance to leave home and do something positive for someone else. I enjoy working with other people who are passionate like me about helping others. I take pride in my work at the Manna House Pantry. I am a stocker in the produce section and when the families come in to retrieve their food, I want them to have a warm feeling that the food was stocked on the shelves with care and love. I want the families to have a feeling that someone cares about them. I feel no child should go to bed hungry and when they go to school learning should be on their minds not going to school just to eat. That really breaks my heart. I have learned over the years not to be wasteful, and to use and take only what my family need. I feel all students should have to volunteer in the community before they graduate from high school for several reasons. The first reason is because it is a noble act. The second reason is because it is a humbling experience. The third reason is because it helps a person grow as an individual, it builds character, empathy, sympathy, and may stop people from being so quick to judge a person before they hear their story.
Ingrid Edge- North Strand Park and Recreation Center
I volunteered my time at North Strand Parks & Recreation
Center.
This is a nonprofit
agency that help families with after school care, summer care, holiday events
and also little league sports. I helped with the Halloween Hupla and also the
after school care and tutoring. These service activities related to the
curriculum we learned in class including a lot of listening. When at the site
children would come up and talk to me with no issue, though they didn’t know me
well they just wanted a listening ear. This site also related to FLE because
parents were also involved and information was being passed word of mouth,
flyers, tv adds, and several more ways of spreading the word about this
organization and about all the events they have year round.
The people who directed the event were very easy going and
they had plenty of experience in this area. They handled children and also
parents with respect and had the knowledge to point them in the correct
direction of their questions. I learned that you have to be confident in
everything you do and don’t let people intimidate you. While helping with these
events I talked to a lot of people who were interested in my major and wanted
to help in any way they could. Some people pointed me in the direction of
internships over the summer, and some talked to me about different jobs and who
they knew could help me.
This organization has
a huge impact on the community! Everyone knows about it around the community
and all of the events are directed to the community to bring them together and
fellowship with one another. This organization is huge in my hometown area!
Most people who live in my area don’t live in neighborhoods or talk to many
people outside of their family. With this organization hosting events brings
children and parents together. Though some of the children go to school with
each other there is several different elementary schools in my hometown area so
not everyone gets the chance to get to know each other. This organization effects
the community tremendously and gives everyone the opportunity to be as one and
enjoy meeting new people and getting familiar with the people in and around the
community they live in.
I really enjoyed working with holiday events to see the
children smile made me realize how grateful they are. I also learned that
children are happy with the smallest things such as small conversations, or
candy. I was always taught to treat people the way you want be treated and
these kids made me reflect on my childhood and made me realize I need to enjoy
life while I can. I could look around at first and see everyone isolated with
their children and families, but as the event went on the children started to
befriend other children and they went their own way and parents began to talk
and make friends with each other. This showed me that though people are from
the same area means absolutely nothing and I was surprised how the children had
to stray away first before the parents actually started to loosen up.

Jonte' Sowell- York County First Steps
- I volunteered all 15 of my hours at the York County First Steps office.
- York County First Steps is a non-profit organization. Family has been the center of our class all semester. Family is one of the core aspects that first steps focuses on. They also focus on the best ways to reach a family rather it is educating them or advocating for them. I was able to learn about who they partner with and how they are beneficial to their organization. Partnership was another topic in class. Mr. David Lisk, my supervisor, told me how partnering with other organizations has helped to increase the number of families they reach each year. I also loved learning that they work with many child development centers and preschools personally to make sure that they providing the adequate services that are needed for the children to be successful. Lastly we worked on their advertisements. We created and labeled brochures, post cards, made phone calls and more. This service activity help to bring class concepts to life.
- I did not only work with Mr. Lisk but i was able to work with his assistant, the first steps advocate, and an early interventionist that partners with them. I was able to learn a little more about the program from working with each one of them. By working with the advocate of first steps i got a glance at what the organization does when it comes to family. On this particular day the goal was to help a low income family find an affordable apartment that worked with their benefits. I saw the time and patients it took to try to set up a walk through as the beginning of the apartment hunting. I also had the benefit to help create an activity for one of the early interventionist's families. Even though each person had their own task, each individual demonstrated the importance of working together and keeping the communication open.
- The organization does a lot for the community. They hold a conference every year for groups and individuals to help better the participates in the best way that they can. First steps also makes personal visits to schools and holds programs for families to come to. They are great advocates, trying to make sure the needs of these families are met. They don't settle for the basics. Each staff member shows passion and drive for the task that they are assigned to do. As long as First Steps continues to reach out and put their all into what they believe in, they will continue to have a positive impact on the community.
- I enjoyed volunteering here so much that i am continuing. I loved the welcoming vibe that i felt from my first day going to volunteering. They were encouraging and made me really excited to start my career. They made the power points from class a reality. I was given insight on a field that i really want to make a difference in. I learned that you can make your mark with your gifts and talents. To use what you are good at to make yourself beneficial to the ones around you.

This center is a place where adults and teenagers, who have disabilities or just are not able to stay at home alone, are able to come during the day. They have a bus that picks them up in the morning and then will take them home in the evenings. They go on trips occasionally. This reflected what I have learned in the HDFS curriculum because this is a resource for those with disabilities. This is a place that they can come and be surrounded by staff who design different activities for the clients to participate in during the day. In one activity, they talked about different social media and how to work with the internet.

On my last day volunteering, Mrs. Sam, the lady in charge of hiring and volunteers, told me that if I ever needed a job that I should come to her and she would see what she could do for me. Volunteering again gave me the opportunity to further that conversation. I was able to talk to her about the different jobs that they have at their facility (working on the floor, helping with breakfast/lunch, working with the teenagers/young adults, working with the elderly). She was able to give me more information and I am actually considering doing my internship here.
4. The potential effect the service activity and/or the service organization can have (or does have) on the community
This organization really effects the community in a positive way. It gives our small town a local resource that many can take advantage of. It can give the families of those attending the program a peace of mind knowing that their loved ones are in a safe space, with staff who truly care about them and are very focused on making sure they are taken care of.

I really enjoy this organization. They are all so friendly to the clients they have and any visitors. You can tell that they really care about those who come to the program. Most of the clients have some sort of disability and all of the staff are trained well and make sure that they get any medicine they need on time. They make sure they are comfortable (temperature wise, where they are sitting, etc.). They play games like bingo and indoor volleyball and it is just so rewarding to see how excited the clients get when they are engaging in those activities.
